INSPIRATION FOR OUR GENRE

After many discussions and disagreements, my group had finally decided to base our film opening around the action/adventure genre. We thought that this genre fits all our different interests for other genres such as Comedy, Drama, Horror, and Science-Fiction. This inspiration stems from the fact that action can be found in nearly most movies. In action movies, there’s a lot of excitement and unexpected scenes. This helps build the anticipation and adventure that the audience awaits. For example, in the “Fast & Furious” movies, there’s always a lot of heavy street racing, car chases, spying, brawls and twists. Characters that we don’t expect to die end up dying at some part of the film, which leaves the audience wanting more of the series. The action genre adds a lot of suspense that we don't often expect the outcome of. Another movie that follows this adventure theme is the "John Wick" series. In the first movie, John Wick is seeking out revenge on those who broke into his home and killed his puppy that his deceased wife left him. After learning about the robbers, John changes his character and resorts back to his assassin days and training. The movie ends with John nearly dying and walking alone with multiple injuries. This cliffhanger builds the anticipation that the viewers experience; thus, leaning into the second and third part of the series.

There are many action movies that tend to incorporate more than one genre, one being "Inception". After the praised remarks of this movie from a fellow teammate, I had to see what this "greatness" was about. Surprisingly, I was not disappointed. I particularly am not a big fan of Science Fiction movies, but Inception was a definite exception. The method of combining action and sci-fi was brilliant and exactly what the audience needed to be kept interested. This is another reason why I chose the action genre; it adds excitement and tension that helps increase interest within the audience. I also wanted to be inclusive of everyone's preferred genre so that they had enough motivation to contribute to the success of our film.

Another movie that deserves all of the high critical acclaims is "Spider-Man Into the Spider Verse". This movie helped me reintegrate my passion for action, beginning at a young age. I was drawn to superhero movies and tried to mirror their powers and character. I was fascinated by Spider-Man and would always defend him as the greatest superhero. Nonetheless, this great action film reminded me of so. The plot revolves around Miles discovering his powers and abilities as well as understanding the complexity of different Spider-Man versions. As he embarks on this journey, his powers grow stronger and the adventure that follows embodies the theme of the movie. There were many symbolism shown throughout the movie, which is something that seems to be common in action movies. Like horror, action movies are usually interpreted differently by many reviewers and editors. This movie was my deciding factor of the genre I wanted to reflect in my film opening since it included comedy, sci-fi, drama, and mystery.

To conclude, I chose the action/adventure genre to be more inclusive of my teammates' genres, so that our film opening would be a success. After being inspired by the works of great action films like John Wick, Fast & Furious, and Spider Verse, it felt right that I replicated the methods that these directors displayed in their action films. The anticipation and suspense that surrounds the audience is greatly executed and I'd like to replicate that in my film. By creating an adventure, the audience will be captivated through the incorporation of sub-genres like comedy, drama, and mystery.
